going for a budget build there then
Given the price of ram these days might be cheaper to setup your own factory if you need that much!

Lol, just ordered 4 250gb samsung SSD's as well, to run with my 2 1.5tb sata drives. I have a quad core CPU now but it's bottle necking my twin gtx 580's.

So I bought a g1 sniper motherboard to overcome it. It's all old but should run ok with my water cooled setup.

Just putting a nice setup together to over lock if

What do you plan to do with the SSDs? Run them as separate drives or as an array?

I'm not fully decided yet.

It's only for a gaming machine so I was thinking of running raid so it's just as fast as I can run it. I'm easy either way. What would you do?

I'm running win 7 64 bit, and just games. All browsing and general day to say will be on my laptop.

I've ordered but not paid yet, I'm in two minds about cancelling the four 250gbs and order one 1tb. Cost about the same but no chance of raid then.

SSDs are so fast that unless you're doing it for redundancy or hammering them with a huge amount of read/writes (i.e. video editing, which I'd rather do on a mechanical drive) I doubt you'd notice a difference putting them into an array.

I guess you could RAID5 them but tbh, it'd be a waste. Unless you need the space, get a 500GB SSD for boot/apps/games etc and a couple of mech HDDs for storage/backups.

Personally, I have a 120GB SSD in my main machine (decent spec Asus laptop), 2x 3TB HDDs in my NAS and a couple of external drives for backup. I use the NAS for storage and have the SSD as my boot/apps drive. Obviously, there's space in a desktop machine for a few drives but I would still go down the small SSD/large fast HDD route.

2TB+ drives are cheap enough.

Games are all 10gb minimum now so I wanted them on the main drive so as to benefit fro the speed.

Ok, in that case I'd go with the 1TB SSD. No point in RAID for gaming on a drive that fast.

Unless it's cheaper to buy several smaller drives.

they are around £150-170 each or £450 for 1tb.

Its pointless running 4 ssd's off a std intel motherboard raid controller. Run 2 in Raid0 or buy a dedicated raid controller like an lsi rocket raid. Then its worth doing.

One of the other factors I was contemplating. Whilst these boards boast raid support it ain't need good enough.
