Cheers

MTF 94, it available from Rover, its around £17-18ish a can.

You get 2.5 ltrs in the Can, the box required 2.3 ltrs so its plently :)

Use a synthetic 75w-90 (i used comma)

This stuff looked after my gearbox very well.

You can buy a 5 litre container of this for the same price as the rover stuff (around £18) from your local car parts distributer (partco or whatever).

HTH

Sorry to Hijack the thread

What oil is the best one to use in the PG1 gearbox, MTF94 or 75w/90 :?

The reason i ask is, last week i changed my clutch, drained the box refilled it with MTF-94.

A week later my gearbox is dead

Im wondering if the change of oil played a factor in this?

The oil which came out the gearbox was a red colour??

I dont want it to happen again! Which oil should i use?

cheers Hetz

Rover started with 10/40 in the boxes and a change at 24 or 36K (can't remember now), then changed to the Honda spec oil MTF94 (Its a Honda design) around 94 ish, which is supposed to be fill for life.

According to the Witham oils website MTF94 is a fully synth 10/40, what else is in there I don't know.

most people are on MTF94, choice is yours.

Rover recommend using a 10w 40 in all PG1 boxes fitted to the 2 litre engined Rover's. After 95-96, MTF94 was standard fill, basically the same grade but no need to change. Anyone using a different grade do so at their own risk, especially those with the ToRSen diff.

No need for any special fully-synthetic type either, mineral or semi is perfectly fine and FS is a waste of money. Gearbox oil change intervals were every 24k except on later car's where it was fill for life with MTF94.

Thicker oil is fine for a gearbox that has some wear, going to a 15w40 has some advantages. But it also makes the change stickier when cold.

Locking this post and making it a sticky, an all too common question that is asked every two hours  :D
