Are there any upgraded fuel pumps I can fit to my 420di? I seem to have destroyed this one.

Fuel injection pump? Whats wrong with it? They are usually VERY reliable (unlike the later ones in the 25/45 etc).

Well I'm not sure if it's the pump or not. It started tapping. I've checked followers and they were all good. Could it have been a fuel pump timing problem? I'm debating whether or not to get it fixed.

Tapping from where? Pump is usually the last thing to suspect on the di engines - they are extremely reliable.

More likely to be an injector or even a manifold gasket, or if cambelt issues in the past then a broken cam bucket.

Gaskets have all been changed, injectors were swapped over from my spare engine which was running perfect, and this is an incredibly loud tapping. It's got to the point now where I've taken the car off the road it's that bad. I'm pretty sure there's a timing issue now as I probably did it wrong when I put it back together lol, but it's definitely engine related, it's pretty bad. All the buckets were checked, and even replaced just to be sure. When I was taking the camshaft out I have the pins to lock the crank in place. The fuel pump sprocket wasn't lining up properly for me to put the pin in though, so could this be the issue? If the pump is out of sync would that cause diesel knock?

Yes is the short answer.

If the cambelt timing isn't exactly right then valves will hit pistons too!
