Hi,

My MG ZT is struggling to start from cold. Up until last week it started on the button, not problems at all. But now it will crank 5 - 6 times before starting. When it's started, if you turn it off then on again it's fine. It's almost as if there's no fuel in the lines but can't see any leaks?

Any ideas?

Thanks,
Lee

It's gone into the garage today to have it looked at, so will keep you posted :)

The M47R shouldn't need glow plugs in this weather. In fact, I've just discovered that the glow plug relay on mine is dead and I've had no problems starting, even in winter.

As mentioned, perform an injector leak back test first.

As always, went into the garage and was starting fine.

MOT was due so they kept it overnight to try in the morning and it started fine :-| They diagnostic checked it too, but no faults. This morning it cranked one or two more times than normal before starting but still started OK.

I'll try the leak back test see if anything happens, but what am I actually looking for? Plus if one injector was iffy surely it would still start with the other 3 and just run rough for a few seconds?

P.S. it passed it's MOT :D

I think if an injector is leaking badly enough, it can cause a loss of fuel pressure and the ECU will stop the engine from starting/cause it to cut out.

Definitely worth getting hold of an INPA compatible OBD2 cable, a laptop and the TOAF software to read any logged codes. TOAF can be dangerous if you don't know what you're doing, but perfectly safe if you just use it to read error codes.
